ABSTRACT

The outbreak of the COVID-19 coronavirus epidemic has promoted the development of masked face recognition (MFR). Nevertheless, the performance of regular face recognition is severely compromised when the MFR accuracy is blindly pursued. More facts indicate that MFR should be regarded as a mask bias of face recognition rather than an independent task. To mitigate mask bias, we propose a novel Progressive Learning Loss (PLFace) that achieves a progressive training strategy for deep face recognition to learn balanced performance for masked/mask-free faces recognition based on margin losses. Particularly, our PLFace adaptively adjusts the relative importance of masked and mask-free samples during different training stages. In the early stage of training, PLFace mainly learns the feature representations of mask-free samples. At this time, the regular sample embeddings shrink to the prototype. In the later stage of training, PLFace converges on mask-free samples and further focuses on masked samples until the masked sample embeddings are also gathered in the center of the class. The entire training process emphasizes the paradigm that normal samples shrink first and masked samples gather afterward. Extensive experimental results on popular regular and masked face benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of our PLFace over state-of-the-art competitors.

ABSTRACT

Contact tracking plays an important role in the epidemiological investigation of COVID-19, which can effectively reduce the spread of the epidemic. As an excellent alternative method for contact tracking, mobile phone location-based methods are widely used for locating and tracking contacts. However, current inaccurate positioning algorithms that are widely used in contact tracking lead to the inaccurate follow-up of contacts. Aiming to achieve accurate contact tracking for the COVID-19 contact group, we extend the analysis of the GPS data to combine GPS data with video surveillance data and address a novel task named group activity trajectory recovery. Meanwhile, a new dataset called GATR-GPS is constructed to simulate a realistic scenario of COVID-19 contact tracking, and a coordinated optimization algorithm with a spatio-temporal constraint table is further proposed to realize efficient trajectory recovery of pedestrian trajectories. Extensive experiments on the novel collected dataset and commonly used two existing person re-identification datasets are performed, and the results evidently demonstrate that our method achieves competitive results compared to the state-of-the-art methods.

ABSTRACT

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a highly infectious virus that has created a health crisis for people all over the world. Social distancing has proved to be an effective non-pharmaceutical measure to slow down the spread of COVID-19. As unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is a flexible mobile platform, it is a promising option to use UAV for social distance monitoring. Therefore, we propose a lightweight pedestrian detection network to accurately detect pedestrians by human head detection in real-time and then calculate the social distancing between pedestrians on UAV images. In particular, our network follows the PeleeNet as backbone and further incorporates the multi-scale features and spatial attention to enhance the features of small objects, like human heads. The experimental results on Merge-Head dataset show that our method achieves 92.22% AP (average precision) and 76 FPS (frames per second), outperforming YOLOv3 models and SSD models and enabling real-time detection in actual applications. The ablation experiments also indicate that multi-scale feature and spatial attention significantly contribute the performance of pedestrian detection. The test results on UAV-Head dataset show that our method can also achieve high precision pedestrian detection on UAV images with 88.5% AP and 75 FPS. In addition, we have conducted a precision calibration test to obtain the transformation matrix from images (vertical images and tilted images) to real-world coordinate. Based on the accurate pedestrian detection and the transformation matrix, the social distancing monitoring between individuals is reliably achieved.

ABSTRACT

Will nationalism thrive in times of crisis? A broad segment of scholarly literature has found that a crisis often leads to the resurgence of nationalism. When the coronavirus started to spread rapidly in Europe, individual European nation states unilaterally closed their borders, hoarded critical medical supplies, and played blame games. The early period of the pandemic crisis revealed some hybrid form of medical nationalism, economic nationalism, and everyday nationalism. However, the common crisis has also heightened the importance of regional solidarity, and reinforces a strengthening of cross-national cooperation and multilateral institutions. Based on empirical discussions, this research offers an analytical framework to establish the hypothetic mechanisms of understanding this mixed phenomenon. Delving into the interaction between crisis and nationalism, this article argues that the causation from one to the other is not a linear, one-way process. There are competing mechanisms through which both nationalists and liberalists can use the crisis to push for their political agenda. Whether there will be a new wave of neo-nationalism in Europe is largely contingent on the responses the EU and the member states adopt in handling domestic and regional challenges in the post-pandemic era. Therefore, instead of simply exploring the causal relation between crisis and nationalism, more-nuanced questions can be examined in the future concerning the conditions under which and the mechanisms through which a crisis is more/less likely to provoke neo-nationalism.
